Homework 1-13-11

Explain what happened in that mountain village we described in class. Your explanation will need to include detail that includes density and molecular weight of gases.

There are gasses of CO2 in the bottom of the lake which is caused by the old volcano. CO2 usually dissolves in the bottom waters of the lake.  The lowest levels of the lake become more and more saturated with gas.  And eventually, when they reach 100% saturation, the gas can bubble out of the lake, creating a foaming column of carbonated water.  Something could have disturbed the bottom of the lake where the CO2 is present.  Doing this it causes the CO2 to rise up out of the lake very rapidly.  In the bottom of the lake there is probably lime stone that makes it react.  Density is the quantity of mass per unit volume.  CO2 is 1 1/2 times the density of air, thus CO2 then went down the side of the mountain to the village because the density of CO2 is greater than air.  This would cause the suffixation of all the people in the village including animals to die.  This is very similar to doing your own model of a volcano when you mix baking soda with vinegar to cause the bubbling of an acid and base mixture.
